Basic Manners and Obedience Class

by Cheryl Johnson Collett

Cheryl was born and raised in the S.F. Bay Area. She has lived with and cared for many animals throughout her life. She graduated from San Jose State University and has worked in a variety of fields (graphic arts, sales, adult probation counseling and substitute teaching) before diving into the life of dog training.

Cheryl has a passion for animals and has been volunteering with Furry Friends Rescue since 1999. She is the Puppy Rescue Director and throughout the years has been rescuing, fostering, training and facilitating adoptions for dogs and puppies. She strongly believes that education and dog training are important factors in decreasing the number of animals abandoned and surrendered to shelters.

In 2002, she received her Certificate in Training and Counseling (CTC), with honors, from the San Francisco SPCA's Academy for Dog Trainers (known as the Harvard for dog trainers). Since then, she has been teaching dog training classes and providing in-home training and behavior modification for dogs and their humans. She is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).

She shares her life with her husband Tom, son Rio and their white German Shepherd, Sierra "Snow Bunny" CGC (Canine Good Citizen). She can often be found on the local trails with a variety of furry fosters and visiting dogs. She can also be spotted on the soccer field playing or coaching Rio and his buddies. She is happy to be a part of the Good Dog Day Care team.

Puppy Socials

Saturdays 11:00am to 12:00 noon

At Good Dog Day Care we love all dogs, but especially the confident, playful well-adjusted ones.  If you have a new puppy in your household and want to support their “social” growth in a safe environment-come to our state of the art facility and watch your pup blossom.

According to Dr Ian Dunbar, (renowned puppy /dog expert) appropriate socialization and training is the single biggest factor determining how closely the dog will approach your view of perfection in adulthood. The first and biggest social skills learning period is between 4 and 12 weeks of age.

Additionally, dogs must learn to inhibit their biting toward all animals, especially toward other dogs and people. The narrow time window for developing a "soft mouth" begins to close at four-and-a-half months of age, about the time when the adult canine teeth first show. Providing your puppy with an ideal forum to learn bite inhibition is the most pressing reason to enroll him in puppy classes before he is eighteen weeks old.

Puppies at Good Dog Day Care socials will be supervised by our trained staff while they make new friends and learn how to play nicely- in a safe and clean environment. They will have positive interactions with a variety of people and learn to read and respond to canine body language.

Come socialize with other puppy parents and talk about the rewards and challenges of puppy raising.  Our staff is here to supervise, discuss useful training tips and answer questions you may have.

How do I do it, what does it cost?
No pre-registration necessary.  $10 fee at the door. Saturdays from 11-12
Bring:
lots of tiny/tasty treats
vaccination records (pups must be 2 weeks past their first DHPP vaccine)
healthy pup (free from sneezing, coughing or diarrhea in the past 48 hours)
flat collar that can release quickly (no choke chains or pinch collars)

Pups must be under 5 months of age when they attend their first social.  Smaller breed pups may be older if they are friendly and social.   Our staff may make other socialization or training recommendations for you if our social is not appropriate for your dog.  We want what's best for your dog and best for the group.
